What is a Breakout Box?

A breakout box is a very important test equipment that helps in testing and troubleshooting of electrical and electronic sub-systems, which is otherwise very difficult to identify by the manual observation. It serves as a troubleshooting tool to determine the wiring of an electrical connector interface on a networking device.

Typically, a breakout box along with breakout harness is inserted between two electrical devices to determine which signal or power interconnects are active. Breakout boxes are extremely useful in troubleshooting connection problems resulting from damages in wiring harness (e.g., wire cut) or defective interconnects. Earlier, people used to pierce the wires and check the continuity of signals and voltages. The problem in doing so is that, at the later stage the wire might get damage and also, it is very difficult to access and identify the signals.

Breakout boxes facilitate troubleshooting process by simplifying access to test signals. The breakout boxes come in various two varieties, one is series connection and other is parallel connection.
